The mission of the M. Patricia Carroll Fund is to extend a helping hand to members of the legal profession in crisis: judges, lawyers, and law students, struggling with serious mental health, substance abuse, alcoholism, or other addictive or behavioral issues. The need is vast: a 2016 ABA survey of more than 12,000 lawyers nation-wide found that one out of every five attorneys identified themselves as problem drinkers, and nearly one in three struggle with depression.
As Pat and John Carroll observed, many of these individuals face financial obstacles in addressing their health needs: insurance coverage is unavailable or insufficient, and, often as a result of years of impairment and uneven employment, there is otherwise no ability to pay. The M. Patricia Carroll Fund participates in the funding of treatment where assistance is necessary.
Lawyers, Judges, and law students are human and may need with substance use disorder, mental health challenges and other stigmatized illnesses. If cost is an obstacle to getting help, the MPC Fund is here to help.
No. Since 1988, Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania, (LCL) has confidentially assisted thousands of Pennsylvania lawyers, judges, their family members and law students struggling with: Stress, Anxiety, Burnout, Problematic Alcohol Use, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Prescription Drug Problems, Illicit Drug Use, Eating Disorders, Problem Gambling, Compulsive Behaviors, Emotional Trauma, Compassion Fatigue, Grief and Loss, and other Emotional and Mental Health Concerns. LCL is great at what they do but they do not provide financial assistance after their initial confidential, free evaluation. That is why the MPC Fund was started. Pennsylvania Lawyers, Judges, and Law Students that need financial help with treatment can apply for CONFIDENTIAL assistance.
